Arthritis

Chondroitin Sulfate:

Chondroitin Sulfate is a compound found in cartilage such as bovine or shark cartilage. It attracts water and holds it in the joint which helps maintain the cartilage and prevent dehydration. (Dehydration has been linked to worsened joint pain). Chondroitin sulfate also protects the cartilage from degeneration by blocking the enzymes that destroy it. NOTE: Not to be used by pregnant woman or if you are taking blood thinners.

Glucosamine Sulfate:

Glucosamine Sulfate is an amino acid sugar that helps rebuild connective tissue if there is tissue to build upon. What I mean by this is if the person has extreme osteoarthritis where they have a bone on bone situation, then they may not see results as well as someone who is in the beginning or middle stages of the disease. However do not let this deter you from trying glucosamine sulfate because most people find it very beneficial most of the time. I have only seen a couple of cases where they didn’t think they were benefiting from the supplementation, only to realize that after they went off of the product they felt worse.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane):

Biological sulfur that is found in fruits and veggies such as onions and garlic. Sulfur is critical in the formation of healthy connective tissue. MSM reduces the inflammation that causes pressure on surrounding nerves which causes the pain. MSM also is said to promote blood flow which aids in healing. MSM reduces muscle spasms.

Other Supplements that have been used for osteoarthritis:

Turmeric: Curcumin the active compound in turmeric is used for its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric also has powerful antioxidant properties. And is now said to have anti-cancer properties. Hyaluronic acid: An Amorphous extra cellular material; it binds cells together, lubricates joints, and maintains the shape of the eyeballs. Tart Cherry: Said to reduce inflammation and increase melatonin production for better sleep patters. It also is high in antioxidants. Boswellia: Is an herb used in Ayurvedic (India) Medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties and to suppress the further breakdown of connective tissue. It is used in both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
